Around 60 objects or groups of objects contain human remains. Of these around 24 (40%) could be described as of ancient British preChristian or pagan provenance.

Those accessions dating from the late 20th century onwards are documented to usual archaeological standards. Victorian accessions have fewer accompanying details.

Most human remains currently in store have been displayed at some time with the possible exception of some of the Bronze Age cremations which have been (and continue to be) the focus of scientific analysis.

All have potential use for display, education or research.

The museum has an Aquisistion and Disposal statement. All collections are included in discussions about potential disposal.

Material from archaeological sites (including human remains) are details in published archaeological reports. Details of historical excavations are accessible through sources such as ‘Revealing Cheshire’s Past’ website, etc.

No human remains are currently on display because of redevelopment in process. Some remains will go back on display when this is complete.
