Tees Archaeology, we are an archaeological service we provide planning advice to Hartlepool and Stockton Borough Councils and support to Hartlepool and Stockton Museum Services. We have no display facilities of our own.
We do not have a disposal policy and no intention to dispose of human remains.
How many human remains are in its collection, and how many of those are of ancient British provenance, pre-Christian or in other way Pagan?:
The precise figure is uncertain due to charnel etc but it is in the region of 350 people. Approximately 150 are pre-Christian as far as we can tell.
Total: 150
How many of these human remains are well documented, with clear context of date and place of exhumation?:
The vast majority of these are from archaeological excavations of some type, I would not expect any more than 5 to not have an archaeological context and possibly fewer than that.
Where there are ancestors in store, is there a history of use?:
Yes. There is continual demand for use for scientific examination and to assist students taking degree level forensics courses. There is limited demand for display from the two museum services
Where there are ancestors in store, is there potential for use, in display, education or scientific analysis?
Does the museum have a disposal policy, and is it including HR with negligible potential in its discussions about disposal?:No
What sources of information about these human remains are in the public domain and where?:
Information about specific assemblages is available on our website http://www.teesarchaeology.com/projects/projects.html
Various research bodies have comprehensive lists of the range of human remains and various aspects of the assemblages have been published.
Does the museum have ancestors (human remains) on display?:Yes
You would need to contact the two museum services above about this
Does the museum hold any iconic ancestors, ie. complete skeletons with a well documented story, or those considered of national or local importance, and are these on display?:
We hold assemblages of regional significance, particularly dating from the 6th – 10th centuries and one assemblage of national importance of Bronze Age date. We do not have any ‘iconic’ individuals
Has the museum used or considered using replicas in displays? If not, why not and what would you find useful in moving to these? If you have, what response did these receive?:
For the museum view you would need to talk to them, we have been involved in projects to reconstruct facial features resulting in life size heads being created. We are also supporting a post-doctorate application from the University of Bradford to create 3D printed replicas of bones with trauma for educational purposes.
