They were professionally excavated by the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust
Where there are ancestors in store, is there a history of use?:
yes
Where there are ancestors in store, is there potential for use, in display, education or scientific analysis?
yes
Does the museum have a disposal policy, and is it including HR with negligible potential in its discussions about disposal?:Yes
Yes, but it does not include details for the disposal of human remains.
What sources of information about these human remains are in the public domain and where?:
not answered
Does the museum have ancestors (human remains) on display?:Yes
Yes, we have an early Christian female skeleton as excavated from Tywyn y Capel, Trearddur. It is laid out in a cist grave as was discovered on site. There were comments relating the initial lack of interpretation, but that issue has now been rectified. Some staff members have commented about the lack of respect for human remains on public display, but these remarks were made informally.
Does the museum hold any iconic ancestors, ie. complete skeletons with a well documented story, or those considered of national or local importance, and are these on display?:
The skeleton on display is from Tywyn y Capel, an early Chrsitian chapel located on the coast at Trearddur. The excavations uncovered the remains of several individuals, some in an excellent state of preservation. Analysis revealed fascinating information about these individuals and their lives, including their geographical area of birth.
Has the museum used or considered using replicas in displays? If not, why not and what would you find useful in moving to these? If you have, what response did these receive?:
no
